April 2013

Melba Geoffroy Memorial Poetry Contest
In memoriam of past director, Melba Geoffroy and in conjunction with National Poetry Month in April, the Danville Public Library will sponsor a poetry contest for all ages.  Poems must be original works and must be submitted from April 1st to April 30th.  There will be three divisions for entry in this contest: 18-adult, 13-17, and 12 and under.  Each division will have a panel of 3 judges from the community. Contestants may enter up to 2 poems; each poem must be typed or computer generated on 8 ½ by 11 inch white paper in Arial or Times New Roman font. No graphics or color ink please. Do not put contestant’s name on the poem. Each poem must be titled and no longer than 40 lines. Your poem will be assigned a number, as this will be a blind judging.  Please submit the poems attached to the entry form which can be obtained at either circulation desk of the library or online at dplindiana.org.

There are no restrictions on form or content; excellence will be the only criteria in judging.  A first prize of $35.00 will be awarded in each division.  There will also be a second ($25) and third prize ($15) in each division, and everyone who participates will receive a certificate.  Winning poems will be published in the DPL newsletter. In future years, we may publish an anthology of past entries. This contest is limited to Hendricks County residents or DPL patrons.  For additional information, please stop by or call the library (317-745-2604).

April TAB
Wednesday April 17th
6:00-7:30 pm
This is our monthly TAB meeting. Everyone in grades 6-12 who has an interest in teen materials collection, programs, and activities offered for teens and “tweens” should consider being part of the Teen Advisory Board of the Danville Public Library. We are always looking for new members! All of our meetings are open to everyone in grades 6-12. We do fun activities at most meetings, plan future programs and activities, develop a volunteer program, and participate in community service activities in addition to helping with other programs offered at the Danville Public Library. Members are not expected to attend every meeting or every event. Once on the board, you will receive monthly information from our meetings even if you are not able to attend. It is my hope that we would develop a large enough group to have at least 8-10 members at each meeting and 20 (hopefully more) members on the board. Serving on this board looks great on college applications and job applications. Those who participate regularly in TAB, for 6 months or more, can request personal letters of recommendation from Kris. Please feel free to bring friends with you to meetings. For more information, call or email
