Position Description
Title: Early Childhood Educator
Reports to: Programming Manager
FLSA Status: Non-exempt
GENERAL SUMMARY: As an Early Childhood Educator and a member of the Danville-Center Township Public Library Team, I am responsible for working with my supervisor and the Youth Services Team to assist patrons with reference and readers advisory services. As a member of the team, I also work to develop programs and outreach with a goal of championing reading and literacy for our community. I understand the library’s vision and values, and contribute to a welcoming environment for both staff and patrons. I collaborate and connect with staff from the entire DCTPL Team.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES - YOUTH SERVICES
I tell the library’s story through my interactions with members of the community.
I develop new and continuing relationships with our community.
I work with the larger library team on library-wide initiatives and outreach.
I am responsible for being familiar with library policies, rules, and regulations and interpreting those to the public and team members.
I am responsible for staying up to date on library wide communication, changes in policy, and being knowledgeable of the activities of the entire library team.
I am responsible for building relationships with the larger DCTPL Team.
I develop literacy activities for youth and create and lead youth-specific programming aligned with the library’s vision.
I work at the desk providing reference and readers’ advisory service, assisting patrons with the use of library equipment and resources, and assisting with community outreach
I create and maintain displays and exhibits as assigned.
I am responsible to be a literate user of the Evergreen ILS, Google, Microsoft Office, and I perform other related duties as assigned.
I perform other related duties as needed to ensure the effective and efficient operation of the library and may be asked to help in other departments occasionally.
QUALIFICATIONS
Four-year College Degree
Indiana Library Certification 4
One year of related experience preferred
Early childhood training or experience a plus
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITITES
Knowledgeable of children’s print, non-print and electronic materials and resources.
Become knowledge of the principles and practices of public library functions particularly regarding children’s services.
Knowledge of the needs and abilities of children and the available library materials, services, and resources, including electronic resources preferred.
Communicate effectively orally and in writing.
Ability to creatively plan, develop, and carry out programs which follow our strategic focus for the year.
Ability to establish and maintain relationships with children, their caregivers and other professionals who work with children.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and the public.
Highly self-motivated, creative, patient, and flexible with the ability to prioritize tasks and work independently or as part of a team.
Able to creatively solve problems as they arise.
Committed to excellence in customer service.
Ability to deal tactfully and courteously with external and internal customers and maintain composure in a stressful situation.
Competency in computer-based technology to create, store and retrieve information.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Duties may require an employee to stand, sit, bend, kneel, crawl, reach, climb, balance, roll a fully loaded book cart, talk, lift materials up to 40 pounds, walk, view a computer monitor for extended periods, or work on their feet for several hours at a time.
Work productively in an environment subject to continuous interruptions and background noises.
Regularly required to speak publicly, talk, and/or hear, use hands to operate objects, tools, and controls, and reach with hands and arms.
Required to read printed materials and information on computer screens.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED: None.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Supervised by the Programming Manager and evaluated twice yearly. Works independently within guidelines and goals established with the Programming Manager, and as part of a group with the other Associates when needed.
